Book Finder Library Volume 1 Review :

I really don't have much to say that one couldn't read in the other 4 and 5 star reviews, for this collection. One thing I will comment on is that some have voiced issues with the "density" of the books, and the way they are thrown into the middle of this world without much preparation. The reason McNeil puts an appendix at the end of her collections is to AID you in following the story, as well as to explain and inject a lot more of the flavor of the world she's created...without doing a huge info-dump in the middle of what's actually going on. It's one reason each entry has a page number to go along with it.I've always found it useful to keep two bookmarks with her collections...one for the main story, and one to refer to the corresponding index entries as I read.Masamune Shirow does much the same thing in his "Appleseed" and "Ghost in the Shell" books. It's just that Carla lumps them all neatly at the back of the book, while Shirow tends to do a lot of 2-3 page asides within the story, and makes copious footnotes in the panels. It COULD be a little more work than someone is planning to do, when reading a graphic novel; but one should go into this expecting a dense and ultimately rewarding story, set in a very complex and well fleshed out world.I can only add that I have loved every new story that McNeil has released, devoured them much too quickly, and I'm ALWAYS waiting impatiently for the next release.I own all of these in paperback, and I'm STILL purchasing the digital versions; as I like to re-read them occasionally, and this will save my physical books from constant wear and tear. :)
The world Carla Speed McNeil creates in Finder is so expansive, imaginative, well-thought-out, and just dang enjoyable that I was shocked by the fact I hadn't heard of it when I picked up my first Finder comic. You know that scene in The Good, The Bad and the Ugly where Clint Eastwood and Eli Wallach are just moseying along and then look slightly to their left and see that they're right next to the entire Union army? I felt like that. How had I missed this huge thing?Of course, when it comes to finding great indie things like Finder you really do have to do some snooping. You're not going to see an advertisement for the latest Finder project on the side of the bus. Just take it from me: this omnibus, collecting the first four books (or three, the first story was originally split into two volumes) of the series, is the place to start and hopefully Finder will creep up your personal list of favorite comics as it has mine.Just what is Finder about? Well, I've been reading it four a few months and I still don't know if I can put it to words. It takes place in the far future and deals with a small group of characters with a background of ethnic groups and social castes and cities and culture that have some parallels to out own but at the same time are wildly different. It's a series and a world that's strikingly original and eerily familiar. The author has labeled it "aboriginal science fiction," and that's as good a summary as I can come up with. Of course, you won't really know what that means until you read it!
