A story that takes place in the last decade of the 1800’s seems accurate to the times, especially with behavior! The main character, Jolene, is a cold, harsh, unemotional woman. Life has knocked her down over and over. A witch of a mother, a husband she does not love, and sisters she barely speaks with. Then she finds out her husband, who is very wealthy, barely leaves her anything in his will, and she will not be able to keep his extravagant lifestyle. The few friends she trusts are actually just acquaintances, but they offer Jolene a possible way to start over in life, and help others. A very interesting and thoughtful story of the very wealthy! It took too long to get started--Jolene doesn't even hear about Max, much less meet him, until the 10% point. And they don't meet until 18%. And what a snob she is! But she is open minded, which helps. Other than helping her stepdaughter grow into a young lady, she is mostly accepting of the way Max and his employees have been doing things on the ranch. She also gradually learns (with Max's help) that she can love again.I have to say I can't really identify with a heroine who is so obsessed with appearances, wardrobe, decorating, social status, and so on. I don't think that changed over the course of the book.
